Wong was een Amerikaanse kunstenaar die vooral bekend stond om zijn stedelijke realistische schilderijen. Zijn werk, dat vaak stadsgezichten en portretten omvatte, werd sterk beïnvloed door zijn ervaringen in de New Yorkse wijk Lower East Side, waar hij woonde.Wong vond tijdens zijn leven weinig aansluiting in de kunstwereld. This exhibition surveys the career of Chinese American painter Martin Wong (1946–1999), from his early years painting street portraits in Northern California—where he dubbed himself the “Human Instamatic”—to his role in New York’s gritty downtown art scene in the 1970s and 1980s and his late work in San Francisco before his untimely death from AIDS.Wong was born in Portland, Oregon, and grew up near San Francisco’s Chinatown. After a year at UC Berkeley, he studied ceramics at Humboldt State University in Eureka.

Chinese American artist Martin Wong (1946-1999) moved to the Lower East Side in 1978, living in the Meyers Hotel on Stanton Street. In 1982, he moved to 141 Ridge Street, apartment 9, which he also used as his studio. According to the Martin Wong Foundation, Wong’s “uniquely representational imagery encompassed the urban environment, the history and stereotypes of Chinatown, and homoerotic content.”
