Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Alex Roberts-Croteau
IRVINE, Calif. --- Paul Jing and the Anteaters scored a memorable victory Saturday night in Anteater Stadium downing San Diego State, 2-0.
- The Anteater keeper was added to the roster from the intramural squad earlier this month after a series of events and injuries have depleted UC Irvine's goalkeeper depth. With Luke Pruter and Alex Shields both unable to play with injuries, Jing got the call to make his collegiate debut as Saturday night's starter
- The defense backed him up as well allowing nine total shots in the match and just two shots on goal with none coming until the 79th minute. Jing made both stops on huge chances to earn his first career saves, win, and shutout while posting the team's first shutout of 2024
- The offense did its part scoring a goal in each half to help toward the team's second straight win
- An attack in the 23rd minute began with Mario Anaya and Francesco Montanile with a give-and-go along the left wing. Montanile feed a ball across the six-yard box finding Roman Warren on the other end to stretch the foot out and guide it home for a 1-0 UCI lead
- The second goal came in the 54th minute as Montanile was back dribbling along the endline. His first feed toward goal was blocked and popped around the six-yard box before landing back to him. He shoveled a pass to Samuel Atiye right near him who poked his first touch through traffic and in for a 2-0 advantage
- San Diego State's keeper Djibril Doumbia did his best to keep UCI out with six saves and many spectacular ones including tipping an Atiye shot up and off the crossbar and out minutes before his goal, and another full extension save in the final minute on a threatening Mario Anaya set piece made it a respectable final score
- The win puts UCI at 3-4-1 as it finishes non-conference action. UCI is 2-1 in its four-match homestand with a final contest coming Wednesday vs. Cal State Fullerton start Big West play
- Warren's goal goes down as the game-winner, the first of his career, and his second career Anteater goal, the first since his freshman season
- Atiyeput home his first of the year and fourth in his career as he adds to his UCI point total now at 12
- Montanile registered his second straight match with two assists now with a team-high five this year and 15 in his career
- Anaya's assist is his first point of the year giving him 12 in his career and six on assists
- Another debut was made Saturday night in Abraham Brown with his first 13 minutes for the Anteaters as a substitute. He played two matches in two seasons for the University of Pittsburgh
"Once I found out about Alex's injury, I knew I needed to be ready. I was locked in every day because I knew this day would come, but didn't know it would come this fast. On Thursday, I had a really bad practice, but I tried to shake it off because I knew I was the guy now, so on Friday I got it fixed, had a good training, and today I kept telling myself that I'm going to get a clean sheet for this team." "I was very impressed with my whole back line. They were telling me this game was going to be a war. UCI and San Diego State have a little bit of a rivalry. I was getting pretty hyped with Mathias and Josh, and they came up really big and blocked some big-time shots." "I've always wanted to be a DI keeper. I played junior college for two years and then took a gap year looking for clubs because I didn't get any DI offers. A miracle happened in early September when I talked with coach Raz on the phone, committed that night, and it's like a dream. Less than a month I get my first game and a shutout, it's crazy. I'm still adapting to coach's tactics, he's a very tactical coach. I've never played in a game this big in my life. My last game was a year and a half ago and now this."
